DESCRIPTION

Alpha lipoic acid (LA) is a natural substance that is produced in our bodies for its important role in sugar metabolism and providing cellular energy.* In the 1980s, alpha lipoic acid was discovered to be a powerful antioxidant, which has fueled much research and interest in supplementation over the past few years.* Lester Packer, PhD, published a recent review of the actions of LA, and contended that alpha lipoic acid is an "ideal" antioxidant.* He explained that few antioxidants are ideal because they do not meet several criteria, including:*

  • Absorption from the diet and bio-availability in the cells *
  • Synergism with other antioxidants and a variety of other antioxidant actuins *
  • Be both water and fat soluble, so it can travel across cell membranes and exhibit antioxidants effects both inside and outside the cell *
  • And have low toxicity
Some of the most important qualities of alpha lipoic acid are the synergistic actions it has with other antioxidants , such as vitamin C, vitamin E, glutathione, and coenzyme Q10.* LA has been found to regenerate and prolong the activity of these important antioxidant nutrients.* In addition, both alpha lipoic acid and dihydrolipoic acid (another powerful antioxidant the body routinely converts from LA*) have been found to deactivate a a type of free radical that is able to do damage to the cells, called peroxynitrite radicals (consisting of both oxygen and nitrogen).* Finally, alpha lipoic acid may also promote healthy blood sugar levels and is thought to enhance insulin function.* All these actions indicate why alpha lipoic acid may become as important as supplementation with vitamin C and E as part of a daily antioxidant regimen. *
