RESEARCH SUMMARY

Food Cravings*: Eating Chocolate is a treat that gives us pleasure, makes us crave it, and has an effect on our moods.* The many theories as to why Chocolate affects our moods are based on the complex chemistry of Chocolate.* Below is a summary of the many components in Chocolate that provide the nutritional benefits: *

  • Biogenic Amines: *The biogenic amines in Chocolate, phenylethylamine (PEA) and tyramine, act as sympathomimetic agents.* Research has linked low levels of PEA to depression, and the increased effects of PEA have been likened to the feeling of being in love.*
  • Cannabinoid-like Fatty Acids: :* Stimulation of the cannabinoid receptors in the brain has been known to cause euphoria and heightened sensitivity of the senses.* Chocolate has been found to contain cannabinoid-like fatty acids that actually bind to these receptors in the brain, which may increase these feelings.*
  • Methylxanthines: Chocolate contains the methylxanthines (caffeine and theobromine) which may act as stimulants, increasing energy levels, while creating a thermogenic effect in the body.* The typical cup of coffee contains about 80 to 100 mg of caffeine, while Chocolate contains around 10 mg of caffeine.
  • Magnesium: It is theorized that we may crave Chocolate to help supplement our consumption of Magnesium.* Both Chocolate and Cocoa Powder contain high levels of Magnesium. In addition, some research has found that the supplementation of Magnesium has resulted in the lowering of Chocolate cravings, and there are links between low magnesium levels and the development of PMS symptoms, which may explain some women's monthly Chocolate binge.*
Antioxidant Qualities of Chocolate: :* Researchers from the University of California, sponsored by M&M/Mars have found that the polyphenols in Chocolate cause Chocolate to have strong antioxidant effects of the cardiovascular system.* The polyphenols in Chocolate have been found to be stronger than the antioxidants in red wine.*
