DESCRIPTION

A Better Standard for Antioxidants - ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity) is the first biological standardization method for antioxidants. With this new quality control method for antioxidants, it is now possible to measure and compare antioxidants more effectively so we are better able to predict their physiological role in the body.* In other words, ORAC is a better standard for antioxidant supplements.*

RESEARCH SUMMARY

The Biological Implications of ORAC: ORAC was developed by researchers for the USDA-ARS Human Research Center at Tuft's University. In their studies of ORAC tested foods and substances, they found that feeding ORAC standardized antioxidants to middle aged rats resulted in promoting healthy aging*. In addition, they have found that the use of ORAC substances can raise the antioxidant power of the human blood, and protect capillaries (in rats) from oxygen damage.* According to the research, the intake of between 3,000 to 5,000 ORAC units per day is recommended to increase the antioxidant power of the blood.* Because it is estimated that most people already get some of this value from their diet, the researchers suggest increasing or supplementing the diet by 1000-2500 ORAC units per day.* ORAC 3000 contains a proprietary mixture of high antioxidant fruits. As the name implies, each serving provides 3000 ORAC units, satisfying the recommended daily supplementation of antioxidants.*

  • Prune - Prior and Cao measured the antioxidant value of some common fruits and vegetables using the ORAC test method. Although everybody knows the use of prunes as laxatives, what many may find surprising is that prunes are one of the strongest antioxidants tested.* In ORAC 3000, the natural laxative compounds are removed, leaving the beneficial antioxidant compounds.*
  • Apple - Remember the old saying, "an apple a day keeps the doctor away"? Research has found that there may well be some truth to this saying.* Apple contains beneficial substances such as phloridzin, chlorogenic acid, and the antioxidant anthocyanidins.*
  • Blueberry - Blueberries have been long known for their antioxidant properties due to their high content of antioxidant anthocyanidins, the compounds that give them their blue color.*
  • Pomegranate - It is the bright color of the pomegranate fruit that give pomegrante its strong antioxidant properties.*
