DESCRIPTION

Alpha lipoic acid is a naturally occurring nutrient that plays many critical roles in human metabolism and health*. Our bodies produce small amounts of alpha lipoic acid, which is primarily used in energy production.* We also derive alpha lipoic acid in the diet, particularly from red meat and green plants. When consumed as a food, or as a dietary supplement, alpha lipoic acid can perform multiple functions for the body as an antioxidant.* This time release product provides a slower and more sustained metabolism of alpha lipoic acid.* Alpha lipoic acid has been termed the "master antioxidant" due to its role in the body, not only as an antioxidant, but also as a special substance that can facilitate the recycling of other antioxidants in the body.* Once an antioxidant quenches a free radical, that antioxidant normally is unable to do it again, unless it is restored. In this way, alpha lipoic acid may even work to increase the effectiveness of other antioxidants in the body.*

RESEARCH SUMMARY

Through its functions on energy production and antioxidants in the body, alpha lipoic acid has been studied in the fields of aging, sugar metabolism, and liver function.*

  • Antioxidants and Aging: Antioxidants are important in aging to protect against free radical damage and alpha lipoic acid has been shown to fulfill multiple antioxidant functions in the body.*
  • Sugar Metabolism: Alpha lipoic acid is a key component of the process in the path to making ATP (a form of cellular energy), and without it sugar is not converted into energy fast enough, and blood sugar levels rise while energy levels drop,* Supplementation with alpha lipoic acid has been shown in both animal and human models to cause a drop or normalization of blood sugar*. A recent review of the use of alpha lipoic acid in blood sugar metabolism showed a beneficial effect on several aspects of nerve conduction.*
  • Liver Health : :* Due to its antioxidant effects, alpha lipoic acid possesses the ability to promote liver health.*
